Star Image

Star image is promoted by the use of low angle shots. This gives the subject of the shot a look of power. Also, the brightly coloured costume gives connotations of happiness and excitement. Props are used to enhance star image, such as novelty headbands, glasses and makeup.
We created our star image by maximising on Steve's long hair and  using mise-en-scene in the form of props and costume. The glasses we intend to green screen, so that we can project an image of the girl in either lens. Her sytar image consists of a hybrid of 60's and 80's hair and make-up. The costume will be either black and white or vibrant primary colours.

Lyric analysis

Blue + Steven
Pink = Indigo

First heard you on the wireless back in Fifty Two
Lying awake intent at tuning in on you.
If I was young it didn't stop you coming through.
Oh-a oh They took the credit for your second symphony.
Rewritten by machine and new technology,
and now I understand the problems you can see.
Oh-a oh
I met your children

Oh-a oh

What did you tell them?

Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
Pictures came and broke your heart.

Oh-a-a-a oh And now we meet in an abandoned studio.
We hear the playback and it seems so long ago.
And you remember the jingles used to go.

Oh-a oh You were the first one.

Oh-a oh
You were the last one. Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star
.

In my mind and in my car, we can't rewind we've gone to far

Oh-a-aho oh,
Oh-a-aho oh
Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.

In my mind and in my car, we can't rewind we've gone to far.
Pictures came and broke your heart, put the blame on VCR.
You are a radio star.
You are a radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star. (You are a radio star.)

Shot List

The shots we used and their purpose are:

  • Long shots to show costume
  • Group shots to show narrative
  • Medium close ups to show character and setting
  • Close ups to show lip sinking
  • Medium shots to show costume
  • high angle shots to promote star image
  • Extreme close ups to emphasise intertextuality
This shot is an extreme close up:

Further intertextual reference

Intertextual reference to the Buggles' own original video is evident through my video's use of narrative, and similar props such as the oversized novelty glasses, bow ties and old fashioned microphones.

Target audience

The target audience for this music video was wider than a usual target audience. It is aimed at all fans of pop/rock due to the genre, teenagers due to the brightly coloured mise-en-scene and fast paced editing, to middle aged audiences because of the narrative. The intertextual reference to Tiny Tempah's video, props and effects also direct it to a teen audience, so this would be the main target audience.

Genre&Production

The production desicsions reflect the pop/rock genre of the video through the fast paced editing and brightly coloured mise-en-scene. This included costume, props and makeup.
